California's Production Boom: A Win for the Golden State and Your Next Project

At Buttercup Venues, we are on the front lines of content creation in California, and we are thrilled to see the incredible momentum building across the state. The recent announcement from Governor Newsom is fantastic news for the entire production ecosystem we are a part of, confirming that California is not just maintaining but strengthening its position as the global home of storytelling.

The state’s recently expanded Film & Television Tax Credit Program has awarded tax credits to 28 new film projects, ensuring that more stories are created right here in the Golden State. This is a major win for our creative community, our economy, and for the talented crews we work with every day.

A Surge in Economic Activity and Job Creation

This latest round of awards is set to deliver a massive economic boost. Collectively, these 28 projects will generate an estimated $562 million in total economic activity for communities across California.

More importantly, this translates directly to jobs. These productions are projected to hire 4,837 cast and crew members and create 22,614 days of work for background performers. This is tangible growth that supports the thousands of skilled professionals who make our industry thrive.

As Governor Gavin Newsom stated, “California’s film and television industry isn’t just an economic engine — it’s part of who we are... This latest round of tax credit awards builds on that legacy while delivering real results across the state: good-paying jobs, stronger local economies, and thriving small businesses.”

Celebrating California-Centric Stories

What makes this announcement particularly exciting is the focus on stories that are authentically Californian. These aren't just projects shooting here to take advantage of our world-class crews and locations; they are telling the stories of our state's vibrant history, diverse neighborhoods, and iconic culture.Highlights from this round include:

  • An untitled biopic produced by Snoop Dogg, set in Long Beach.

  • Ang Lee’s Gold Mountain, an epic about the California Gold Rush.

  • Guerrero, an independent film directed by Gina Rodriguez.

As Snoop Dogg put it, “Big love to the California Film Commission and Gov. Newsom for holdin’ it down with that tax credit. Y’all making it possible for us to tell my story right here where it all began.”

This sentiment was echoed by Gina Rodriguez, director of Guerrero, who said, “Having the opportunity to bring this project to life in Los Angeles means a great deal to me... it allows us to collaborate with the inimitable crews and craftspeople who make California such a singular home for filmmaking.”

Production Beyond the 30-Mile Zone

This program's benefits are being felt far beyond Hollywood. Seventeen of the new projects will film in locations across the state, generating significant economic impact for regional economies. With 286 shoot days planned outside of the traditional 30-mile Los Angeles filming zone, communities in Alameda, San Bernardino, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Sonoma counties, as well as Joshua Tree and Palm Springs, will see increased activity.

This commitment to statewide production showcases the diverse landscapes California has to offer, from the historic streets of Sacramento to the deserts of San Bernardino.

Conclusion: The Best is Yet to Come

The success of the expanded Film & Television Tax Credit Program is a clear signal that California is investing in its most iconic industry. This surge in production creates a vibrant and stable environment for creators, ensuring that the Golden State remains the world's premier destination for filmmaking for generations to come.
