Permit Requirements for Events and Filming
Every jurisdiction in Greater Los Angeles handles filming and event permits a little differently. Here's how each one works, what they need from you, and how far ahead to apply.

Most of Greater Los Angeles is coordinated by FilmLA, the official film office for the region, which handles permits for public spaces including streets, parks, and city-owned properties. Several cities run their own offices instead.

By jurisdiction
City of Los Angeles — FilmLA
Application submission — apply through FilmLA's online portal. Applications must be submitted by 10 AM on the required deadline, depending on the complexity of the activity.
Lead time — high-impact activities such as stunts, special effects, gunfire and aerial work require 4–7 days.
Insurance — proof of insurance is required, naming the City of Los Angeles as an additional insured party.
Fees — vary based on location and activity type.
City of Santa Monica
Coordination — the city contracts with FilmLA for permit coordination services.
When required — permits are required for filming in public spaces, including parks and city facilities.
Insurance — proof of insurance naming the City of Santa Monica as an additional insured party.
Special conditions — beach, pier and Third Street Promenade activity may carry added requirements.
City of West Hollywood
Online portal — West Hollywood runs its own Permit & License Portal, which streamlines applications for filming and events.
Insurance — provide proof of insurance as required by the city.
Special conditions — additional permits may be required for activities such as street closures or drone usage.
Lead time — apply as early as possible; high-visibility corridors book out quickly.
City of Beverly Hills
Dedicated process — Beverly Hills runs its own process for filming and event permits, designed to minimize disruption to residential and commercial areas.
Application submission — contact the Beverly Hills Film Office or use their online system.
Lead time — submit at least 5 business days in advance.
Special conditions — street closures and large-scale events may require additional approvals.
City of Glendale
Application submission — contact the Glendale Film Office or use their online portal to apply.
Insurance — proof of insurance is required.
Special conditions — additional permits may be needed for activities like drone usage or street closures.
Lead time — allow extra days for residential neighborhoods and city facilities.
General requirements — every jurisdiction
Insurance — all cities require proof of insurance naming the respective city as an additional insured party.
Lead time — submit applications well in advance, especially for high-impact activities.
Coordination with FilmLA — for areas managed by FilmLA, comply with their guidelines and deadlines.
Permit on site — keep a physical copy of the permit at the location to avoid a shutdown.
